Anger over parking proposal Meeting draws support from politicians By Julia Evans BUSINESSES IN Fendalton fear for their future after being presented with a city council plan that would reduce parking outside their shops. Elizabeth Fry, owner of The
Cook Shop, organised a petition of 336 signatures, which prompted an on-site meeting between Ilam MP Gerry Brownlee, city councillor Jamie Gough and Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board chairman David Cartwright. The concern for Mrs Fry and the other shops on the corner of Holmwood Rd and Rossall St, including Le Panier, Holmwood Dairy, Flowers on Holmwood and The Preservatory Café and
Delicatessen, is that they would lose their walk-in customer base. “It’ll kill us . . . the reality is it’s putting all these businesses in real danger of having to close their doors,” Mrs Fry said. She said she regularly hears from customers that the only reason they stopped was because there was a park free. Gilles Thébault, owner of the adjacent shop Le Panier, said he would have to shut up because it would create another “dead
corner” in the city. The proposal includes a pedestrian island and curb expansion on Rossall St and no stopping restrictions around the corner on to Holmwood Rd. The purpose is to address speeding drivers and pedestrian safety. Mr Brownlee said he, Cr Gough and Mr Cartwright were “all on the same page.” After the meeting, Cr Gough said he was confident that “common sense” would prevail.
Mr Cartwright said it was good to get on the ground and see for themselves how it would affect the shops and help come up with a remedy. But he said they needed to be sensible and realistic. “It’s a busy corner, but it’s not broken so we don’t need to fix it. There are examples in the city that are much worse,” he said. Mr Cartwright and Cr Gough will take the businesses concerns back to the community board.

That’s the situation currently facing business on the corner of Holmwood Rd and Rossall St, Fendalton (see page 1). The businesses have got a 336-signature petition and brought in heavyweights Gerry Brownlee and senior city councillor Jamie Gough to try and stop the city council plan to restrict off-street car parking. All power to them. The Denton Park saga rolls relentlessly on and we have more coverage today on page 3, and community board member Debbie Mora has her say in our Soapbox column on page 6. News Concern over park reports By Julia Evans COMMUNITY BOARD members are worried they haven’t been given all the information regarding plans to put a new mega-facility at Denton Park. The park has been shortlisted as a site for the Hornby Library and Customer Services and South West Leisure Helen alongside Kyle Broughton and Warren parks. However, Hornby-HalswellRiccarton Community Board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton and member Debbie Mora have expressed concern the board hasn’t been given all the technical information about the best site. Ms Broughton and Ms Mora confirmed the board members were given technical documentation collated by the city council on Thursday. But Ms Mora said she felt the board members still didn’t have

“I’m highly-concerned about the delay . . . one report was done in 2013 so staff have had it for a long time,” Ms Broughton said. She wants to know why this information was not given to the board sooner. “It’s important we have all the information so we can make the right decision. It’s a $32.5 million project,” she said. But even after reading the report, the board is still divided on whether Denton, Kyle or Warren park is the most suitable place. “Even with the information, it’s not clear what the best location is,” Ms Broughton said. To make the right decision as a board, Ms Broughton and Ms Mora both said the board should have all the technical information as well as input from the community. “We are elected to support our community and it is difficult to do this when we ourselves are not armed with all the information,” Ms Mora said. •Debbie Mora’s Soap Box, page 6

In Brief BOOKARAMA SUCCESS Sales from the Rotary Club of Bishopdale Burnside’s Bookarama made 16 per cent more than the previous year, but the club would not disclose the exact figure, member Lindsay Crossen said. He said the event’s success was a result of donations of good quality books from people in the north-west. Over the next 12 months, the money will be used to support the community. COFFEE CART A coffee cart has been granted a spot at the Halswell Quarry following a city council idea to get small businesses to set up in the space. Coffee Vice has been awarded a temporary lease to set up shop near the Singleman’s House. The coffee cart is currently operating Tuesday to Friday, 8.30am-2pm, and Saturday to Sunday, 8:30am-4pm. YOUTH JAZZ Burnside High School students Felix Backhouse and David Petch have earned places in this year’s New Zealand Youth Jazz Orchestra. Felix’s audition earned him a place in the trombone section and David will play trumpet. The two students will join the orchestra from May 25 to June 1. This year’s international guest soloist will be New York trumpeter Alex Sipiagin. Concerts will be held in Wellington, Manawatu and Auckland.

Veterinary practice
OUR VISIT TO UC DAVIS, CALIFORNIA Steve, Isaac and myself recently spent time at UC Davis, the #1 Veterinary school in the world. For 2 years running it has received this huge accolade and when you are there you can see why. It operates and is the size of a mini CHCH Public hospital. They are a teaching hospital as well as seeing referral patients and first opinion clients. Their specialities include 24/7 emergency and critical care, cardiology, neurology, ophthalmology, oncology and surgery. They were originally set up to see 5500 patients per year, last year they saw 50,000 patients. Everyone was so friendly and helpful and enthusiastic about being part of this college. It had a wonderful vibe... Isaac was hooked. Approximately 140 students get accepted yearly in to Davis, with around 10% being male. It cost about US$45,000 for tuition( $64000 NZL) and then there is living costs on top of that. Vet students on average come out owing US $135,000. These students have spent the previous 4 years obtaining an excellent undergraduate degree just to get accepted, majoring in science and maths. There are 30 colleges of Veterinary Medicine in the US and each year about 3000 students get accepted. About 40% of students who apply get accepted somewhere. In your 3rd year you start to branch off in your area of interest – either companion animal, equine, mixed practice or production animals. After their 4 year degree at Davis, most will apply for 1-2 year internship at another Veterinary College to further their skills in an area they are interested in. Davis don’t offer internships. Our freshman (first year) guide loves dentistry so her plans are to become a specialist in this field. After her internship, she then needs to apply for a residency at one of the 30 colleges, which could be anything from 3-5 years more study!! These are hard to come by, and you have to be the best of the bunch, although a Vet degree from UC Davis stands you in good steed. So to be a specialist in your field in the US takes between 13-15 years, and the debt these students accrue is massive, a few get scholarships, but most have to pay. I met a vet in her 40’s who still has a student loan. Steve spent 2 days tagging along with ophthalmology specialists, residents and students on rotation. First and second year students get at least 2 weeks of ophthalmology per year ( 27 years ago when I studied at Massey, 1 day was dedicated to “eyes”). He really enjoyed the collegial discussions on cases, sussing out all the latest equipment, chatting to the students and doing rounds with them. Steve came away pleased with his skills

and expertise in ophthalmology, although a few pieces of equipment caught his eye. Isaac and I thoroughly enjoyed our 3 hour tour of the entire faculty. Isaac loved the exotics hospital where they house and treat the reptiles, birds, rabbits, turtles etc. We also visited their raptor centre, home to rescued birds of prey that can no longer see or fly. He also enjoyed watching elbow arthroscopy on a Golden Retriever from a viewing room. He could see them cutting and sucking out torn cartilage from the video screen. What amazed me was the amount of people in theatre – 9 in all, including the chief surgeon, 2 residents, 3 anesthetists and 4th year students. There were so many people milling around keenly observing. They do MRI and CT here and even have a massive MRI machine that can fit a horse into. The most expensive patient to date was a spoodle who underwent dialysis for 18 months, visiting the hospital twice weekly to have all the toxins removed from her blood. Her final account was US$140,000! The most expensive piece of equipment is a linear accelerator used for radiation treatment for cancer patients costing a little over 1 million. Apparently one of the only surgical procedures NOT performed here at Davis is renal transplants as when attempted on cats over 10 years ago, the survival rate was poor. A handful of colleges perform renal transplants in cats including the Pennsylvania and Georgia College of Vet medicine. We thoroughly enjoyed our time spent at Davis and I thought how amazing, fun and expensive it would be to be a student now studying vet medicine at UC Davis. The students we met were just so absorbed, very happy and grateful to be at this world class faculty. I came out thinking I am so in the right profession. -Dr Michele McMaster
Library will finally be leased to community
By Julia Evans THE OLD Halswell Library building will be repaired for use by the community two years after it was closed. At a recent meeting, the Halswell-HornbyRiccarton Community Board agreed to secure a temporary lease of the building for the Halswell Community Project. The old library site has been empty since the Te Hapua hub opened in 2015. Residents at the time put forward suggestions as to what the building could be used for, saying they did not want it to fall into disrepair. A playcentre, funeral chapel or police station were some of the ideas put forward. However, the building at 381 Halswell Rd has remained empty and there has been no funding for its maintenance in the city council’s Long Term or Annual Plan. The community board approved up to $20,000

View from above the traffic A SERIES of photos show views of the Russley Rd and Memorial Ave intersection. The New Zealand Transport Agency took the photos from the top of a 27m gateway arch on State Highway 1. The structure will be made up of 30 different sections and weigh 400 tonne. The arches are set to be completed halfway through this year as part of the $112 million SH1 upgrade project. The arches will cost about $4
million. They have attracted criticism due to the cost, which is being funded through the National Land Transport Fund. The money comes from petrol tax, road-user charges and vehicle registration fees. The arches, designed by Warren and Mahoney, are said to symbolise the crossing of paths, namely the Southern Alps and the braided rivers of the Canterbury Plains, and the excitement of travel.

as we install new pipes in Riccarton What are we doing? You may have seen the road works on Riccarton Road and surrounding streets over the last few months. We’re spending about $14 million installing new wastewater pipes in this area. These pipes will improve the wastewater system by reducing overflows and providing for growth across the Riccarton, Avonhead and Burnside areas. How long will it take? Works are due for completion in November and we are taking measures to minimise disruption to motorists and pedestrians as much as possible during this construction phase. We’re also taking the opportunity to improve some water supply pipes at the same time as well as carry out other roading and pavement works.

Denton Park, the heart of Hornby community, where the community is strongly for keeping this park, and understandably so. For many decades this park has been used as a hub for sporting groups, community fairs and other fun activities gathering the community together. Lack of room, very high traffic congestion, loss of sporting fields, and lack of future-proofing are concerns that locals fear would dampen the community feel. I empathise with their very real concerns where the logistics to build in and around Denton Park could be very difficult to manage.
These groups are expressing strongly that they are feeling unheard at the moment. We are elected to support our community and it is difficult to do this when we ourselves are not armed with all the information. There is a common misconception that the community board hold all the information. We don’t. Assumptions are made that it is all a fait accompli for Denton Park, however, there are two other park options to consider and I encourage the community to take part in the feedback public consultation process. Along with their Save Denton Park Facebook Page, I encourage them all to have their say on the Have your Say portal on the city council website, this information is then fed back to the community board which then makes the relevant recom-

mendation to the city council. The final decision rests with the councillors. Personally, with so much expenditure – $35 million – I believe is would be important to obtain an independent report on these proposed sites to ensure the independent experts in traffic safety, roading infrastructure and land stability are all accounted for, taking into account growth, access and land use. This may still be requested. The community board needs to read such a report in conjunction with the community feedback so a fully informed, accurate decision can be made for our future generations.

Mark Thomas, fire risk management officer I KNOW I’ve repeated the advice about looking when cooking dozens of times over the years and it looks very much like it’s never going to cease completely. But every now and then I despair a bit. Like on Wednesday when within three-and-a-half-hours fire trucks responded to three different cooking incidents. A house completely filled with smoke from a forgotten pie in the microwave in Sockburn was followed by a pot on the stove, again filling the house in Kotare St and a further incident in Bryndwr where smoke inhalation was the result for the elderly occupants. Any of these could have been much worse. A life or a house gone. But all of them were preventable. Stay in the kitchen. The smell of burning in your home can be frightening for anyone. More so if you’re blind.
The occupant of a house in Addington thankfully did the exact right thing, again on Wednesday, by phoning 111 and having the local crew there within minutes. Turned out to be a tea towel smouldering on an element. The potential here was a bit frightening. I’ve not mentioned arson here for a long time. It’s still occurring but the removal of most of the empty houses in the red zone has made it less visible or newsworthy. A drum of diesel spread along the road in the early hours last Sunday in Wigram was lit and left by whatever morons thought it was clever. They’re still out there. As stupid and dangerous as ever.

Feedback leads to new skate park plan DESIGNS FOR two new skate parks in Halswell have been revised based on public feedback. The former RiccartonWigram Community Board agreed last year to build two new skate parks for Halswell – one in the Knights Stream subdivision, and another in the Halswell Domain, near an existing playground. The city council received 147 submissions during the public consultation period on the actual design, with the majority in favour of the designs. As a result of the feedback, changes have been made to the original plans to address the concerns and suggestions raised. A small quarter pipe in the Halswell Domain, which some submitters were worried could create noise issues as skateboards or scooters landed on the concrete, has been redesigned with a roll-over and larger quarter pipe instead. The new plan for Halswell Domain includes one additional shelter and an extra picnic table. Rock stepping stones and seating have been moved to allow for better flow into the skate area, more open space

AFTER WINNING the national championships, a cappella group L’Attitude Quartet is bound for Las Vegas. The group finished first at the Sweet Adelines New Zealand Quartet Competition in Dunedin recently. It is made up of members from throughout the country, including two from Christchurch. Carolyn Duggan, L’Attitude Quartet’s tenor, and Virginia Humphrey-Taylor, who sings the bass, both belong to the Christchurch City Chorus. The group’s other members are Patrice Driver, baritone, of the Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus, and Toni Griffin, lead singer, from the Bella A Cappella Chrous in Keri Keri. While getting together is a challenge, the women have achieved success through a passion for singing, dedication to independent vocal work and monthly weekend rehearsals. L’Attitude Quartet will represent New Zealand at the International Sweet Adeline Quartet Competition in Las Vegas in October.

St Thomas go on the road By Gordon Findlater ST THOMAS of Canterbury College will look to return to the win column when they travel to Nelson at the weekend. They will travel north on Friday ahead of Saturday’s match against Waimea Combined. “We’ll be aiming for a win up there and ideally we can pick up a few tries and get a bonus point out of it as well,” said coach Paul Burton. They proved they can be one of the surprise packages in the UC Championship after pushing last year’s round robin winners Christ’s College at Upper on Saturday.

They held an 11-10 advantage at the break before going down to 14 men in the second half when Jordan Riki was given a yellow card for a tip tackle. Christ’s made the most of the extra numbers, eventually going on to win 26-18. After two rounds, Christchurch Boys’ High School is one of just three teams with two wins after defeating Burnside 46-8. Timaru Boys’ High School and Nelson College also have two wins. CBHS and Timaru will meet
next Tuesday in what could give an early gauge of who the competition favourites will be. “They had a good young side last year and they’ve had a great start to this season, so I think it’s going to be a really competitive match,” said CBHS assistant coach Rob Smith. FOR THE first time, Halswell United will send teams to compete in an Australian football tournament in Canberra. An under-14 girls team and under-13 boys team will head to the Kanga Cup in July. It is the largest international youth football tournament in the Southern Hemisphere, with more than 375 teams
from a number of different countries competing. Halswell United general manager Sam Bunn said it was all about player development and it was the teams that wanted to go. Bunn said the girls team was looking to win in their maiden outing, while the boys would be competitive. “It is all about experience, and this will provide quite a bit of
that,” she said. The cup competition started in 1991 in Sydney with about 35 teams competing before it was moved to its current home in Canberra in 1993. Previous participating teams have come from Australia, United States, England, Denmark, Italy, Russia, Georgia, South Africa, South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, Philippines, India, Indonesia, East Timor, Fiji and New Zealand.

Directions
Ingredients ¼ cup Caster sugar 2 Lemons, to give three tsp finely grated zest ¼ cup Unsalted butter, softened ⅔ cup Hazelnut, blanched and chopped ⅓ cup Dark chocolate, chopped 6 Pears 1½ cups Marsala or Ginger Wine 1 to serve Whipped cream, or lightly sweetened creme fraiche Directions Preheat oven to 185 deg C. In a bowl, mix three tablespoons sugar, two teaspoons grated lemon zest, the soft unsalted butter, chopped blanched hazelnuts and chopped dark chocolate. Peel pears, slice in half and scoop out the seeds to make a well. Trim the base of each, enabling them to sit flat in a greased baking dish. Sprinkle each half pear with Marsala or Ginger Wine. Spoon the filling into the centre of each
pear, and sprinkle well with the remaining Marsala and castor sugar. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until done. The pears are cooked when a skewer can be easily inserted into the thickest part. Sprinkle the last tsp of lemon zest over the warm pears, and serve with semi-whipped cream or crème fraîche. PARSNIP AND APPLE SOUP WITH PARSNIP RIBBONS

Melt the butter in a large saucepan. Add the onion and cook over a very low heat for about 20 minutes until it’s soft and barely coloured. Add the parsnip and apple, then cook for five minutes, stirring frequently. Add the stock and simmer gently for about 45 minutes. Allow to cool a little, then purée using a stick blender or food processor. Reheat to serve, adding the cream and salt and pepper to taste. To make the parsnip chips, peel the parsnip, then use the peeler to make long, thin strips. Heat about 3cm of vegetable oil in a pan, then add the parsnip strips in batches, frying until golden. Drain on paper towels, then use as a garnish. WATERCRESS AND BROCCOLI WITH FETA AND ROAST GARLIC Ingredients 50g Butter
1 Onion 1 Carrot 1 Potato 2 Bay leaves 500g Broccoli, chopped 1 Ltr Vegetable stock, or chicken 2 Garlic 1 bunch Watercress 1 to taste Salt & freshly ground pepper 100g Feta Directions Melt the butter in a large pot. Add the diced onion, carrot, potato and bay leaves. Stir for two to three minutes to soften. Add the broccoli and the stock then simmer just until the broccoli is tender. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 200 deg C, slice the garlic in half, drizzle with a little olive oil and roast until the cloves are soft, about 30 minutes. Add the watercress, turn off the heat and cover. Leave for three minutes to wilt the watercress then season and purée. Ladle into warm bowls and top with the roasted garlic gloves and crumbled feta. Serve with crusty warmed bread and butter.

No time to be lonely Resident Madeline Casey is just as busy since she moved into her townhouse at Woodcote in 2014 as she was when she lived in the city. Previously the proud owner of an award-winning garden, she’s still able to indulge in her passion for pottering in her own sunny garden, but now the Woodcote gardener is on-hand to help with the heavy work. “In the spring, I love the tulips and hyacinths, and anything with a scent, especially roses and sweet peas,” she explains. She enjoys the companionship available at Woodcote. “It’s a very friendly atmosphere, not too big. We know one another and I’ve even come across old friends here.” With her sister, Rosemarie O’Carroll, right next door, Madeline doesn’t feel lonely. She participates in some of the many activities that Woodcote has to offer, from the weekly trip to the shops, the fortnightly happy hour and quiz, entertainers who visit to perform for the residents, regular excursions, as well as

A place for celebrations Jean Haines moved to the rest home at Woodcote almost a year ago, and although she admits it took her a while to settle in, she’s pleased she made the move. “I had been on my own for a long time but I love it now I’ve got to know people.” She chooses to get involved with as many of the activities as she can, such as choir, newspaper reading, crafts, and the library. She knows it’s important to “keep her brain ticking over” and says the meals are wonderful. “The girls who work here are nice and we have a lot of laughs.” Jean enjoys the late-blooming roses she can see from her room and the cosy warmth of the room as winter approaches. She’s looking forward to her whole family coming to see her in her new home when she turns 90 later this month. Scattered as far
afield as Auckland and Adelaide, her son, daughter, two granddaughters, three greatgranddaughters and two great-grandsons will all be visiting Woodcote to help her celebrate.

More to Rarotonga than the beaches By Mike Yardley PLANNING an escape to Rarotonga? Tear yourself away from the beach to dig a little deeper at the roots of the island. Venture along the back road and enter a timeless world of free-range harmony in abundance. On my various forays along the back road, I feasted on freshlyplucked pawpaw, mango, guava, bananas and star-fruit, bursting from the roadside trees. Scenically insatiable, I marvelled at the colourfully-painted hinterland homes and the dense plantations, bracketed by Rarotonga’s serrated peaks which exude a Jurassic Park aura. There are many ways to get a flavour for Rarotonga’s vast green heart, including taking a ride with the recently launched Tik-e Tours. These tropical three-wheeler luxury tuk-tuk limousines are fully electric, so unlike the racket they make on the streets of Bangkok, these beauties will glide you around Rarotonga’s ravishing interior in virtual silence. My driver/guide was a worldly elder called Mata, a natural and charismatic raconteur. Throughout my tour, every passer-by warmly waved out to Mata, or stopped to chat. One chap we talked to was busy cultivating noni fruit by hand. Lauded by locals for centuries for its numerous health benefits, noni juice has taken the world by storm and is the Cook Islands’ No 1 agricultural export product. My two-hour tour traversed a

Popular Colorado up for a challenge By Ross Kiddie NEW ZEALAND has become quite the ute-buying nation. That doesn’t surprise me, Kiwis are following trends out of North America and Australia. In the last few years ute sales here have shot up to record levels. While it’s fair to say most buyers are choosing Ford and its Ranger, all manufactures which ply that part of the market are claiming success. None more so than Holden with its Colorado, it is selling hard on the heels of Ranger, a new model was launched last year and as I reported in these columns in November, it is a standout in terms of refinement and, of course, practicality. That evaluation focused on the mid-spec LTZ; five days with the range-topping Z71 has done nothing to alter my affection for the popular four-wheel-drive double cab. Clearly, the Z71 is aimed more towards the recreational buyer, it has decals, stripes, body kit and a level of specification which wouldn’t work for many industry roles. However, I found the deck cover functional and useful for low loads, I took a deck full of foliage to the green recycling

just 2000rpm it is a powerhouse, easily on a par with all of its competitors. Drive is harnessed through a six-speed automatic transmission. A manual is available, but it won’t compete with the auto in terms of sales figures. Shifts are smooth and the gearing is such that it provides relaxed motoring at highway speed along with the ratios needed for slow speed, off-the-seal travel. Backing up that theory is the fitment of a true low ratio transfer box, it is manipulated electronically by a console-mounted dial switch, at the driver’s command. It’s fair to say I didn’t take the
centre, to be able to pack it down and hold it secure with the fibreglass cover was simply brilliant. I also used that area to transport the cricket gear I use as year 4 coach, to have it locked secure when I was away from the vehicle was also another bonus. These tasks were no match for the Colorado’s 1000kg load capacity, but they did serve to prove how adaptable the modern ute has become, and if you add in a 3500kg tow rating the Colorado is right up there in terms of load carrying performance. At the other end sits a 2.8-litre, four-cylinder twin-camshaft turbocharged diesel engine. It is rated bay Holden at 147kW and with 500Nm of torque available at
Z71 off-road. When Holden launched the new series, it included a traction-challenging off-road excursion in North Canterbury. I felt I didn’t need to replicate that given all vehicles completed the undulating and muddy hill sections without drama. Instead, I spent most of my time with the Z71 at highway speed and my regular commute. In those conditions it seems more car-like that ute-like. Sure, there is a lot of bulk to manoeuvre in close confine situations, but it’s no worse than any other vehicle of its type. And if you take into account the number which are being sold, buyers quite obviously don’t rate that as a challenge. On the open road, the engine turns over slowly at 1550rpm

at 100km/h in top gear. At that speed it returns a 6.2-litre per 100km (46mpg) instantaneous fuel usage figure, that accounted for an 9.4l/100km (30mpg) average figure during my time with the ute. That correlates well with the 8.7l/100km (32mpg) figure Holden claims for a combined cycle average. Road and wind noise are both kept to a minimum, and the Colorado, as a series, imparts a smooth ride. Of course, it is better with a bit of weight in the back, but the reality is the loadbearing suspension is absorbent and the cab doesn’t jiggle unnecessarily on uneven surfaces. That’s an area where local research and development pays dividends. Holden Australia places a huge emphasis on developing vehicles for down under conditions and it certainly shows in Colorado. The ride is acceptable and the entire in-cabin experience is comfortable. I guess, it would need to be. The Z71 isn’t cheap at $66,990, but for that money you do get a lot of kit. Even though the Z71’s flashy bits disguise its traditional ute look, make no mistake, it is still the quintessential Colorado which has carved out a huge reputation as a tough, go-anywhere worker.
